Fall 2 Concludes With A Dual Win at Medway!

Closing out the unconventional Fall 2 Track & Field season, the Lancers took to the road for their lone away meet at Medway High School. Fueled by true depth, Norton demonstrated just how strong the team has trained and developed over the shortened season by scoring in every event. The girls won 8 out of the 10 events with four TVL-leading marks to close the season in a perfect 5-0, handling Medway 57-29. While on the boys side, two event sweeps, a couple TVL-leading marks and countless personal bests pushed the men to 3-1-1 on the season, the second best record in the league, as they beat the Mustangs 59-25.

Girls (5-0)

As all Fall 2 meets have gone, the Lady Lancers kicked off action with a 1-2 finish in the 55m hurdles. Senior captain Heather Kurland (9.2h) was just shy of her TVL-leading 9.1h but still comfortably upfront of TVL #2 hurdler Shaylee Owens (9.6h), who also just missed her season's best of 9.5h. In a hostly contested short sprints between the top TVL sprinters, sophomore Ali Murphy (7.6h) was beat to the line by Medway's Brooke Scott (7.5h), forcing her to settle for runner-up honors. Kurland (7.7h) was not far behind her claiming a third place finish, scoring six points in a span of just a couple minutes.

The mile was lead gun-to-bell by Brooke Dennett (5:58.3h) clocking her second sub-6:00 mile in as many attempts. A hot battle for second had teammate Erin Podbelski (6:12.3h) prevailing over teammate Carly Goodwin's (6:13.5) massive personal best while Medway's Liana Harkins squeezed her way in the middle of the three-way finish to claim the final third place point. In a similar front-leading fashion, senior captain Isabella Pietrasiewicz (1:38.8h) gave Julia Palin's '18 600m record a scare, grabbing a near two second personal best to claim the lap-and-a-half event, with Ava Scagnoli (2:02.5h) closing hard over the final 100m to ensure a 1-3 finish for the Lady Lancers.

Kurland (4'-10") quickly made mince-meat in the high jump circle, matching her personal best from last week to claim the title. With Medway's top fields athletes Laci Santos jumping and throwing, the increased pressure allowed for senior captain Michaela Whiteside (29'-6") to take full-advantage, besting Santos in the circle by a foot and a half to claim the shot put.

Back on the track, sophomore Shea Podbelski (3:06.0h) continued the distance assault, taking the race from the gun and putting separation over Medway's Erin Shipos over the closing lap to earn the W in a near four second personal best improvement. Sandwiching Shipos in the results, with her first mark under 3:30, was classmate Sienna Pietrasiewicz (3:27.8h). Racing in her first varsity 300m, Owens (47.0h) droped another second off her best to claim runner-up honors to Scott, with freshman Phoebe Gesner (47.3h) capping an impressive rookie campaign with a third place finish.

Wrapping up track action, a trio of Lancers contested the 2 Mile for the first time this season. Earning the double win, coming back from the mile, was Dennett (13:45.5h) who seized the race after two laps and never let go. And in another close finish in the closing meters, Goodwin (14:41.0h) edged out Kiera Dooley (14:42.6h) for the final scoring position.

Podbelski completes the final hand-off to Murphy

Opening up with Pietrasiewicz's season best 62.1 split and closing with Murphy's 61.8, the Lady Lancers took rightful hold of the TVL's best 4x400m team. Coupled with the younger Pietrasiewicz (70.6) and Shea Podbelski (63.9), the quartet out-gapped Medway from the gun, winning by 14 seconds in a TVL#1 mark of 4:18.0h. To place into perspective, the indoor 4x400m school record set last year was only six seconds quicker (4:11.97), predicting a very promising future for this underclassmen-heavy group.

Boys (3-1-1)

Proving that his 7.6h was no fluke, senior captain Paul Wisnaskas (7.6h) replicated the effort despite a stumble out of the blocks in the 55m hurdles. Grabbing a comfortable win by several seconds, Wisnaskas matched his school record from last week (7.6 handtimed converts to 7.84 FAT). Freshman Julian Melendez (10.0) was not far behind him in a personal best to earn a third place point. To get more reps on his blockwork, Wisnaskas (6.6h) toed the line in the 55m dash against TVL#1 Connor Gilmore of Medway. Proving his worth, Gilmore (6.5h) edged out Wisnaskas as he had to settle for second place in a new personal best time (6.6h converts to 6.84 FAT).

In a race filled with personal bests, it was Charlie Mills (4:57.8) who edged out teammates Aiden Masse (4:59.4h) and senior Gabe Dennett (5:09.7h) in the mile run. For Mills, it was a new personal best and his first time cracking the 5:00 mile barrier, while Masse made it his second sub-5:00 in as many weeks. In a smaller field, though, senior captain Sean Wynne (1:27.2h) shattered his 600m best by three seconds to seize the TVL#1 spot. Classmate Derek Bamford (1:33.8h) opened up his legs as well in the lap.5 to hop on the TVL Top 10 list. The two Lancers were the lone competitors in the 600m.

Wisnaskas (5'-10") capped off his final TVL "indoor" meet in jumping late into the meet. He had three solid attempts at 6'-0" but walked away with a respectable 5'-10" win. Freshman Matt Cropley (5'-0") claimed second place while senior Duncan Owens (4'-10") completed the Lancer sweep in the vertical jumps in his final track meet.

Wisnaskas soars over an early HJ attempt

An entire underclassmen squad took over the 1,000m race as freshman Sean Nichols (3:02.6h) ran a 13 second improvement since his first attempt over the distance. A lean by Medway's Corey Vesko forced Nichols to silver while Casey Dion (3:09.5h) raced up from his usual 600m to shave off two seconds off his previous best in placing third. While in the field, senior captain Ryan Carroll (42'-7.5") completed his undefeated season in the shot put circle, besting the field by a near full 10 feet. Dennett (30'-1") skyrocketed to another personal best to complete a 1-3 finish in the throws.

Gilmore controlled the 300m from the gun but clearing enough in his wake for Danny Tran (38.0h) and Jason Soares (38.4h) to fly through two massive personal bests to finish 2-3 behind him. The elder Dennett (12:23.1h) seiezed the two-man 2 Mile race from 400m in to claim a victory for the Lancers to help the team effort. And in closing the meet, the squad of Mills, Masse, Nichols and Wynne raced the clock in an unfamiliar lineup, still managing to break 4:00 by running 3:56.6h to conclude Fall 2 festivities.

No one insight as Wynne anchors home the 4x400m relay
