Wisnaskas and Pietrasiewicz Lead the Medal Charge at Freshmen-Sophomore Invitational

In a non-scoring display at Reggie, the Lancers showed off the future of the track team at the MSTCA Auerbach Freshmen-Sophomore Small School Invitational. Plenty of seasons bests took place heading into the second half of the winter season.

Girls

A small group of athletes traveled up to Roxbury to compete against the best underclassmen from the state. And the Lady Lancers wasted no time getting to it. Starting on the infield, sophomore Heather Kurland (10.41) just missed out on a qualifying spot for the finals in the 55m hurdles, placing 18th overall in a near-season's best time. Once the oval events started, another personal best was set with freshman Skye Goba (5:52.37). Running hard from the start of her heat, Goba held onto the quick pace and managed to distribute her effort efficiently to earn herself a huge nine second personal best to place 14th overall in the mile. Meanwhile in the last heat, in earning her first medal of the year, sophomore Isabella Pietrasiewicz (5:26.82) gave chase to Millis's Bethany Steiner, eventually leading herself into no-man's land in a race against the clock. The fast pace taxed Pietrasiewicz but she held her position strong to win the runner-up honors.

The lone field event athletes, sophomore Michaela Whiteside (29'-8.5") sought to improve her 7th place finish in the same event last year. Though still not 100% healthy, and slightly off her best throw, she has still established herself as a threat to watch in the shot put, earning herself a 4th place finish in the event.

In other Top 20 performances, the mid-distance power continued in the 1,000m race. Squeezing in a season's best time was Destiny McGrath (3:30.22), chasing down the rest of her heat to claim a 20th spot in the event. In the fastest section, Megan Cross (3:26.45) had to overcome an injury to her knee to stay pace with the rest of the heat. Nevertheless, only several seconds off her personal best, she fought incredible circumstances to stagger to a 14th place finish.

Wrapping up the meet on the girls side was the traditional 4x400m relay. The quartet of Kurland, Lindsey BingelCarly Murphy, and Pietrasiewicz were given the task to sneak onto the podium out of the second-fastest section. And the group did not disappoint, running perfect handoffs and splits to run the fastest relay time of the season, breaking 4:30 in 4:29.09. With the second best time heading into the last section, the group sweated out the slower start to the fast section, watching the official results to see their final podium position. In the end, only two teams were able to best them, fitting themselves into a 4th place finish in the Auerbach 4x400m relay.

Boys

The Men of Norton continued to haul in the medals, with sophomore Paul Wisnaskas leading the charge. On the infield, Wisnaskas ran to 8.35 in the 55m hurdles to win his preliminary heat and to head into the finals with the second fastest time. With much more competition in the finals, Wisnaskas unleashed a powerful race with a strong upper-body follow-through over the last couple set of hurdles, running away to a team and season's best 8.09 seconds to win the hurdle event. He remained in the infield to compete in the high jump, where an unfortunate jump-off led him to sharing the runner-up honors after clearing 5'-8".

Later in the day, sophomore CJ Liebherr (39.15) ran to a season's best time in winning his section but he fell just short of the final medalist position, clearing himself comfortably in the top ten, finishing 9th overall. But it quickly followed with the 1,000m run, where Sean Wynne (2:50.33) fought his way through a back-and-forth race to bring a blanket finish into the line. In a crowd of five, Wynne found himself towards the front, using his personal best time to grab a 4th place finish.

Wynne would then join Liebherr, Charlie Mills, and Wisnaskas to conclude the day in the 4x400m relay. Strong legs kept the Lancers in the second position with Wisnaskas anchoring the relay to close the gap to Carver HS. However, the Lancers ran out of real estate and defended their silver medal from last year, with a five second improvement and a time that would have placed them seventh in the Tri-Valley League (3:47.88).
