Girls Clinch TVL Title & Boys Post Season Bests in Sweep of Millis on Senior Night

Following a pre-race ceremony to honor the Class of 2020, the Lancers posted a slew of personal and season bests in a strong thrashing of Millis at Wheaton. The girls completed their second undefeated 5-0 season in a row and clinched the TVL Small School Title in winning 74-8, while the boys finished the regular season 2-3 after beating Millis 59-23.

Boys (2-3)

The Men of Norton managed points in every event in taking control of the meet from the get-go. In a small heat of hurdlers, James Partridge (9.16) led the way in grabbing the win as he continues his breakthrough season. Following close behind in third, in his first indoor season, was Austin Petitpas (11.40) continuing to learn form as he grabbed his first varsity point. While in the dash, underclassmen Danny Tran (7.27) and Cameron Bratt (7.31) lead a 1-2 finish as the two of them posted personal bests in the event.

In hitting the full oval, junior Sean Wynne (4:51.3) put together a strong battle with Millis's ace. A full back-and-fourth race left Wynne in a close second place finish but a massive personal best followed as a result. In the 600m, senior captain Ethan Tetrault (1:37.6) took the lead from the gun and ran a consistent race to comfortably win five varsity points for first. Not too far behind him, Casey Dion (1:44.6) posted a massive 10 second personal best in narrowly missing out for second, grabbing a third place point.

Ryan Carroll (38'-4") continued to breakout in his junior year, grabbing the win in a small personal best over senior captain teammate Jameson MacNaught (35'-5.5"). On a day where the officials were measuring short on throws, the Lancers posted strong results in heading into Friday's State Relays. While on the track, Paul Wisnaskas (2:54.2) continued to expand his range winning comfortably in the 1,000m run. Derek Bamford (2:59.2) needed a lean and a massive personal best but still earned a second place finish over Millis in the event. Wisnaskas (5'-10") would come back in the high jump, on tired legs, to grab the victory over a field that could not clear opening height.

The Lancers posted their lone sweep of the day in the 300m, where Jason Soares (40.13) pushed Tran (40.42) to a flat track personal best, as the pair went 1-2. Bratt (42.18) edged out teammate Sean Deady (42.33) from the second heat to grab the last varsity point in finishing in third. While in the last individual event of the night, Aiden Masse (11:45.4) doubled back from the 1,000m to just miss his personal best in the two mile, kicking too late but still earning a third place varsity point.

Arguably the most competitive event of the night was saved for last. While Millis did not field a 4x400m relay team, the Lancer team of Soares, Tetrault, Wynne and Wisnaskas used the opportunity to improve their season best time and TVL ranking. The group stayed behind Norwood, Medfield and Hopkinton early on but began to pick up positions as Wynne grabbed the baton from Tetrault. From there, Wisnaskas cut into Medfield's lead on the chase group and hammered home the final 55m to finish third in the field, besting Medfield, and beating Millis by default. An improvement of nearly nine second resulted in a season's best and TVL #4 3:46.7.

Girls (5-0)

Four sweeps and depth kept the Lady Lancers out front from the start of the meet to the bell lap of the 4x400m. Fireworks went off early for the Lancers as Heather Kurland (8.94) shattered her personal best in the 55m hurdles to beat the clock and the rest of the field by almost two and a half seconds. Her TVL #2 time improves her state-qualifier and cleared the field for Maddie Dolack (10.37) to inch closer to her PR and secure a second place finish in the event.

Kurland (7.65) was not done as she made her debut in the 55m dash. Sans hurdles, she displayed incredible speed to best teammate Ali Murphy (7.76) and senior captain Eve Rodriguez (7.78) who managed a personal best in Kurland's wake. 7.65 puts Kurland at another TVL #2 position while Murphy sits at TVL #8 and Rodriguez at TVL #9. Kurland's (4'-6") night ended in the high jump, where she grabbed her third win of the evening over teammate Lindsey Bingel (4'-6") on attempts. Lily Newell (4'-4") earned her first career varsity point in grabbing third.

After the dash finished, the Lancers faced uncontested by Millis in the mile, which allowed them to join Hopkinton and Norwood in a much larger and contested heat. In doing so, this brought out personal bests by Skye Goba (5:53.4) as brought out the best out of senior captain Ashley Schepis (5:58.3) who broke 6:00 for the first time. Destiny McGrath (6:08.0) just missed her season's best to round out the Lady Lancer 1-2-3 finish.

Persistent mis-measuring did not interfere with the throws crew. Michaela Whiteside (30'-3.5") shaped up well to crack 30 feet for the first time this season, moving up to TVL #6 in the process. Following Whiteside was senior Erica Ransom (28'-10") who improved her personal best by a near foot to grab second and a TVL #9 mark. Back on the track, Isabella Pietrasiewicz (1:41.9) broke away from the field early in the 600m and raced solely the clock to earn herself a personal best, a near 10-second win and improvement on her TVL #2 mark. Senior Kylie Dion (1:50.9) rallied hard to best Millis's #1 to earn a second place finish on a season's best performance.

Megan Cross (3:18.2) faced Millis's star Bethany Steiner in the 1,000m run. Though Steiner broke off early, Cross's speed developed from the 600m this year propelled her uncontested through the line in second in a personal best time. Freshman Shea Podbelski (3:29.7) followed suit in a personal best mark, also running primarily alone in the 1,000m, to grab third place, while the fourth and final sweep occurred moments later in the 300m. Rodriguez (45.71) led the charge for Bingel (46.39) and Newell (49.31) as well finished well within reach of season's bests as they were their own competition on the night.

Schepis (14:14.7) returned from the mile to double back in the 2 Mile. After debuting at 14:06, she fell off pace and missed her best but competed against no Millis runners and was able to grab the win, setting the stage for the 4x400m. Millis chose to not field a team but the state-qualifying group of Bingel, Dion, Pietrasiewicz and Murphy held the rest of the field to contend with in order to improve on their TVL #1. They remained at the front early and stayed there through each handoff. It wasn't until Pietrasiewicz, though, that the group pulled ahead of Medfield and seized the lead. It only grew handing off to anchor Murphy, who went out like a rocket in the opening lap. Medfield began to chip away as Murphy ran out of steam over the final 55m but they were never in contention as the group broke the line at 4:13.3; an eight second improvement over their previous state-qualifier. In securing their TVL #1 mark, they unintentionally threatened the school record of 4:12.58, set in the 2016-17 season.
