Girls Move to 4-0, Boys Earn First Win in Double-Sweep Against Medway

Nothing could derail the Lancers on Wednesday. Both squads were determined to make a statement against the Medway Mustangs at Reggie, so it was only fitting the girls bus popped a tired on I-95 outside of Quincy, only 25 minutes away from Reggie. Nevertheless, a little bit of shuffling and patience by the side of the highway ensured that all made it to the meet in time for events, as the girls reached 4-0 in a 61-25 showing while the boys grabbed their first win of the season, comfortably beating Medway 51-35.

Boys (1-3)

Sure enough, the drama was not confined to the highway as the boys 55m hurdles went off with a clear sweep led by Paul Wisnaskas, James Partridge, and Jack Buchan. However, a timing error gave all competitors in the first heat invalid times ranging from 44-45 seconds so official times were not made available at the end of the competition. Once found, Wisnaskas (8.04) earned a huge season and TVL best while Partridge (8.92) made his first dip under 9.00 and Buchan (9.45) joined him with another personal best. Wisnaskas (7.05) carried that momentum into his 55m dash season debut, grabbing a team best time while earning second place points to position the Lancers out in front early.

Momentum continued into the mile where senior captain Ethan Tetrault (5:15.94) used a season's best time to lead Derek Bamford (5:29.13) in a 2-3 finish, keeping the Mustangs at bay. And a close finish by Charlie Mills (1:37.09) almost earned him a varsity first in the 600m, but fortunately, Casey Dion (1:53.84) ensured another 2-3 Lancer finish by closing hard in the final 55m. While in the shot put, Ryan Carroll (38'-2.5") launched a lifetime personal best by almost two feet to fly clear of everyone in grabbing the win against Medway.

In the 1,000m run, Sean Wynne (2:51.73) went out quick to try to better his season's best to auto-qualify for states. However, he fell off the pace with 400m and had to settle with the first place finish over Medway. Aiden Masse (3:09.50) inched underneath his previous personal best to make a 1-3 Lancer finish. While following the five-lap contest, Jason Soares (41.01) made his comeback to the team after surgery official with a second place finish in the 300m dash.

In the high jump, Wisnaskas (6'-0") continued his mid-season form in besting the field in matching his season's best while Buchan (5'-4") followed through and finished right behind him. Doubling back in the two mile to ensure a victory, Bamford (11:38.17) still mustered a strong season's best despite running on tired legs while Tetrault (12:27.33) fought through illness to keep the lead intact. The pair finished 2-3 in the event to all but clinch the meet. Still, Medway opted to not run a relay so the group of Buchan, Mills, Wynne and Danny Tran (3:59.34) got additional work in on the evening in grabbing an uncontested win.

Girls (4-0)

Per reports, several key Medway athletes were sick and could not attend Tuesday's meet and the girls took full advantage. The Lancers scored in every event, save the 4x400m, and outscored the Mustangs in all events except for the relay and the high jump. Aside from points, it was still a wildly successful evening. Junior Heather Kurland (9.11) got the meet rolling strong in the 55m hurdles. Running right next to the TVL Small's leader in Medway's Redfield, she kept her in check the entire race, without hitting any hurdles. In outleaning her at the line, Kurland cut nearly a quarter of a second off her time in the win while also comfortably qualifying for the D4 State Championships. Continuing not far behind her in a breakout season of her own was Shaylee Owens (10.24) who sandwiched Redfield in a 1-3 finish.

Following the hurdles, freshman Ali Murphy (7.75) made her return to the 55m dash and nearly qualified for states herself, missing the mark by just 0.04 of a second. She led senior captain Eve Rodriguez (7.85) to a season's best time and a 1-2 finish in the event. While simultaneously on the oval, the girls mile was dominated by Isabella Pietrasiewicz (5:17.19) who won the event outright in a solo season's best performance. Freshman Shea Podbelski (5:47.01) cut a full ten seconds off Sunday's medalist time at the Freshmen-Sophomore Invitational in holding off Medway's top runner, to put together another 1-2 Norton finish.

From there, the Lady Lancers only distanced themselves further from the Mustangs. An end of race DQ brought the Lancers their only sweep of the day in the 600m as Megan Cross (1:48.98) paved the way for Kylie Dion (1:54.35) to pull through for second while Kaitlin Russell (1:58.88) earned her first varsity point in her 600m debut following the disqualification. Pietrasiewicz (3:09.21) returned on short rest to race the 1,000m, finishing second in the meet outright but first against Medway while Skye Goba (3:36.55) made the same double and managed to score third in her second event of the day. Murphy (43.10) and Rodriguez (46.14) returned in the 300m to claim an easy 1-2 finish as well.

In the field, Michaela Whiteside (29'-5.5") out threw the Mustangs to grab first in the shot put with senior Erica Ransom (27'-3.5") sandwiching Medway in third. A lot of back-and-fourth from the high jump to the sprints brought about confusion but still allowed the Lancers to grab second and third place finishes by Kurland (4'-8") and Lindsey Bingel (4'-6"). Kurland earned a season's best while Bingel secured a huge personal best.

Cross (12:49.39) rounded up the scoring in the two mile as her first attempt at the event, on the later half of a double, almost burnt her. But she battled the 16 laps valiantly and held off the late charge by the sitting Mustang to grab first place points. Classmate Lauren Anderson (13:41.72) also made her debut in the event to the tune of a third place finish.
