Three School Records Fall as Kurland & Wisnaskas Compete at MSTCA Pentathlon

A short turnover from the All-State meet, the Lancer multiathletes, Heather Kurland and Paul Wisnaskas, traveled to Reggie to compete in the MSTCA Pentathlon. On Tuesday, Kurland (2,823 points) shattered the school pentathlon record of 2,739 points set by Kassidy Campbell during the 2014-15 season, in finishing in 11th place. The next day, Wisnaskas (3,375 points) also bested his previous school record by over 200, set earlier this year at the Northeast Invitational. In fitting fashion, Wisnaskas once again finished runner-up at the MSTCA Pentathlon in a MA#2 and US#7 score.

Tuesday - Kurland 11th place - 2,739 points

Wasting no time in chasing the school record, Kurland (8.75) explored out of the blocks and scraped one of the early hurdles, but still ran to a massive personal best, leaving herself only 0.05 seconds off the 55m hurdles school record in the process. Her 8.75 was sixth best in the field and earned her 851 points. Quickly heading over to long jump to carry over momentum, she immediately shot up to near PR shape in hitting 16'-8" on her first jump. But on both of her last two jumps, she hit rhythm strong in cracking the 17 foot barrier for the first time, hitting 17'-0.5" on both jumps, earning her 612 points with the eighth best jump in the field.

Her third personal best on the night came from the shot put. Unfortunately her weakest event, she made the most of in order to compensate, hitting 22'-9.75" for 332 points. While at the high jump, she remained consistent despite having not jumped since early January. With a 4'-8" best, Kurland reached the metric equivalent, clearing 1.42m (4'-7.75") for 534 points.

Needing just over 400 points to take the school record, Kurland (2:47.11) went out conservatively in the 800m before letting loose to close hard with all she had left. In a blanket finish in her heat, she earned 494 points to comfortably clear the school record and finish 11th in the pentathlon overall.

Wednesday - Wisnaskas 2nd place - 3,375 points

Despite a difficult All-State performance by Wisnaskas and a recently diagnosed illness, he remained optimistic in improving his school record. And it became clear immediately. Wisnaskas (7.98) fell back into his hurdles rhythm in running sub-8.00 in a finals only contest, placing him fourth overall in the field and cashing in 855 points. In coming full circle from last weekend's performance, Wisnaskas (21'-1.25") blew out of the long jump pit in finally clearing 21 feet. His new school record in the long jump gave him another top five finish in the individual event, earning him runner-up along with 682 points.

Improvement showed up in the cage as well. Wisnaskas (31'-6.5") cleared his all conditions best in the shot put, eclipsing the 31 foot mark easily. His weakest event, Wisnaskas still earned 462 points to keep him well above school record pace. He then moved onto the high jump that inched slowly along as the penultimate event. Nevertheless, Wisnaskas (5'-11.5") delivered as he typically does in the high jump, leaving a half inch off his personal best but finishing in a tie for third in the event, earning 644 points.

With the school record essentially locked in heading into the 1,000m, Wisnaskas (2:53.21) delivered a season's best time that gave him 732 points as the 12th finisher in the event, but the third finisher in his heat. That run not only earned him second place in the pentathlon, helped him shatter his own indoor record but also became the all-conditions school record for Wisnaskas, as he also owns the outdoor pentathlon record of 3,292 points.
