Stalters, Wisnaskas and Pietrasiewicz Podium as Lancers Take on Winterfest

The Lancers quickly bounced back from their sweep of Medway on Thursday to take on some of the strongest in the state at the MSTCA Winter Festival this past Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center. Following a standout performance on Thursday, "Stalters Sunday" continued a fabulous week for senior hurdler Corey Stalters as a 1-2 punch with sophomore Paul Wisnaskas reintroduced the duo to the indoor circuit while Isabella Pietrasiewicz chased a competitive distance field down to bring her name into discussion as a top rising star in the state.

Girls

The non-scoring meet still produced several top-10 results from the Lady Lancers. Starting off almost immediately, senior captain Julia Newell ran away with her 55m dash heat in an 8.02 top-15 qualifying time, earning her a spot in the finals. She used the extra race to move further up, running a quicker 7.90 to grab 10th place overall in the event.

As Newell went off, Pietrasiewicz found herself in the first heat of the mile, chasing down Westwood's Sarah Conant and Northampton's Mary Yount. The two surged hard to the lead while Pietrasiewicz worked her way up through the chase pack. Coming through 800m in roughly 2:42, Pietrasiewicz began making work through the chase pack in order to pick up distance on Conant and Yount. Finding herself in no man's land, in between the leaders and chasers, she worked hard against the clock to run a slightly negative split, coming through the line in a clear third, pacing 5:20.75. Shortly after her run, freshman Megan Cross ran her way into a strong start against the rest of the state. Less than a half second behind the top freshman in the 1,000m run, Cross ran an aggressive first 700m and came back in the last 50m to earn a personal best, finishing 10th in 3:23.33.

The last Lancers top-10 finishes were capitalized in the relay events. The 4x200m relay team of Newell, senior captain Kirsten Loring, Heather Kurland, and Eve Rodriguez (1:53.07) just missed posting a state-qualifying time, finishing a step behind heat winner Pentucket, and earning fifth place overall. Following a quick baton exchange to the 4x800m team, the squad of Cross, Hannah Kubinski, Hannah Delea and Pietrasiewicz used late race strength to overcome tired legs to move back up through the pack (and past lapped teams) to grab a 10:45.77 season-opener, good enough for seventh place overall. And finally, wrapping up the meet, the 4x400m relay team of Kylie Dion, Casey Ball, Destiny McGrath and Carly Murphy nearly grabbed second in their heat, losing out by only 0.11 seconds, but nevertheless, utilized a never-give-up race to claw back and finish eighth overall, running 4:37.77 in the process.

Boys

The fireworks went off early on the boys side. Starting off the meet with the 55m hurdles, both Stalters (8.19) and Wisnaskas (8.42) comfortably won their heats to advance to the finals. Running together in the second final heat, the duo put on another show running a flawless race, resulting in personal bests for the pair. Wisnaskas (8.14) shaved off five-hundredths of a second to claim runner-up honors with Stalters (8.12), once again, matching his personal best set this past Thursday against Medway, to claim the Winterfest 55m hurdles crown. Stalters' final marks the third meet in a row in which he either matched or broke his personal best in the event.

Senior captain Corey Stalters sets to win his preliminary heat
Starting off in the outside oval, the first heat of the boys mile lead to the first state-qualifier of the day, aside from Stalters' and Wisnaskas' improving on their previous state-qualifiers in the hurdles. In the mile, senior captain Austin Carroll found himself in a comfortable heat filled with competitors gunning for early season qualifying marks. An early slow pace put him in catch-up mode which cost him dearly towards the end. Yet, Carroll still ran away with a strong mile start to his season, sneaking underneath the state qualifying mark, placing sixth overall with a 4:40.26.

Senior captain Austin Carroll getting down low to get out front early
While Carroll wrapped up a state-qualifier, junior teammate Ethan Tetrault prepared for his season premiere in the 1,000m run. Looking for a Coach's Invite qualifier, Tetrault got out hard early and only had a slightly slower middle lap disrupt his nearly perfect split race. His 2:49.94 personal best, nearly three second improvement, was rewarded with a 10th place finish overall in the meet. Meanwhile, Wisnaskas took the infield at the high jump mats, continuing his busy day with a 5th place finish jumping 5'-10".

Moving into the relays brought about another W on the day along with a state-qualifier. The rarely run 4x200m relay, comprised of senior captain Peter Rivard, CJ Liebherr, Stalters and Wisnaskas nailed flawless handoffs to win their heat in 1:38.51. After completion of the heats, the Lancers appeared to have secured a second place finish, behind Pope Francis HS. However, it was determined that Pope Francis interfered with Oakmont during the second heat, disqualifying the Pope Francis team which had run a slightly faster time. Thus, Norton claimed a strong relay victory, just short of the 1:37.48 state-qualifying standard.

Moving onto the longer distance relay, the 4x800m relay came into the meet ranked first overall. However, tired legs got to the crew, as each athlete was competing in their second event of the day. Nevertheless, senior captain DJ Nihill, Tetrault, Sean Wynne, and Carroll put together a great run for the day, cultivating a long day of work. Their time of 8:51.40 earned them, not only a fifth place finish, but also squeezed them underneath the state-qualifying standard of 8:56.24.
