Distance Doubles Secure A Sweep of Medway

The annual Winter Concert at NHS left the Lancers slightly shorthanded at Wheaton College. But the team proved ready for the challenge as key third-place finishes and successful distance doubles, particularly by Hannah Delea and Isabella Pietrasiewicz, on the girls side continued an undefeated start to the season, as the Lady Lancers escaped Medway, 46-42. On the boys' side, standout performances by Corey Stalters and the boys' 4x400m relay ran the meet down to the wire, ultimately prevailing against the Mustangs, 45-40.

Girls (2-0)

With the Winter Concert forcing several varsity members from last Saturday's meet to miss the Medway showdown, the girls utilized every single point that they could in order to cushion themselves heading into the final events. Unsure of where Medway's stars would go, slightly unconventional coaching tactics pushed the girls to a second TVL win in as many weeks. Leading off from the start, senior captain Julia Newell (9.66) ran a season's best time to grab the first point of the night for the Lancers, finishing third in the hurdles. Quickly rallying back to the start line, Newell (7.79) led the charge along with Eve Rodriguez (8.08) to a 1-3 finish in the 55m dash. They were followed by both Pietrasiewicz and Delea in the mile. Pietrasiewicz took off hard with Millis's Bethany Steiner as they separated themselves from the pack. She comfortably finished first (5:19.0) against Medway, and second to Steiner, while Delea (6:00.1) pulled off a strong finish to nab second place points. Both Delea and Pietrasiewicz's times are season bests, while the Pietrasiewicz's securing an automatic state qualifier.

Meanwhile, in the shot put circle, the Lady Lancers pulled off a clutch sweep that secured a clear nine points to Medway's zero. Sophomore Michaela Whiteside (31'-0") battled through injuries to heave a personal best that betters her freshman-sophomore invitational qualifying mark. Not too far behind was senior Amanda Hamer-Moreno (28'-6.5") who managed second place points despite knee issues. Rounding out the scoring was Erica Ransom (26'-5"), throwing seven inches farther than last week's opener against Dover-Sherborn. On the track, the girls continued to add to their lead, with strategic racing in the 600m. Despite still learning the pacing, junior Kylie Dion (1:55.0) managed to outrun the field to grab first overall, leading teammate Ashley Schepis (1:58.6) in her second third place finish of the season in the event.

The meet began to shift as Medway elected to not run All-Stater Ava Vasile in the 300m, saving her for the climaxing 4x400m relay. Senior captain Kirsten Loring (45.98) took full advantage to clinch the event with a phenomenal, determined first place run. Rodriguez (47.22) continued her busy day clinching another point for third. The completion of the first distance double brought about Pietrasiewicz (3:17.9) gapping the field early and holding her lead comfortably for five points in a 1,000m first place finish. This ultimately lead to the most exciting event of the day, with Delea and Hannah Kubinski (4th in Mile; 6:08.2). With the absence of key distance runners to the Winter Concert, the Lady Lancers were tasked to score points in the two mile to clinch a victory against Medway. Delea stuck with the front group throughout the entire race and slowly started to separate after 1,800 meters. Her gap widened and she held strong through to ensure there would be no Medway comeback. What could have been a potential Medway sweep flew in the other direction, with Delea (13:22.2) running a personal best to capture five points and Kubinski (14:07.2) breathing down Medway's neck in fourth place.

The meet moved onto the 4x400m relay which Medway's squad, with Vasile in tow, nearly won the entire competition. The Lancers, made up of Loring, Casey Ball, Schepis and Dion were able to put together a strong effort (4:41.0). However, the five points earned was not enough, as the two mile performance secured the win for the Norton Lancers, 46-42.

Boys (1-1)

The boys had a different approach towards their victory, scoring in every single event, second place or better, to display a well-rounded approach in a full-fronted team effort. Stalters and teammate, Paul Wisnaskas, got the ball rolling in the 55m hurdles. The duo, who grabbed state-qualifiers last week, got off to a hot start. A small slip threw Wisnaskas (8.84) slightly off cue as he had to settle for second place. But sure enough, Stalters picked up the slack, running a flawless and quick race, earning another personal best in his specialty (8.12). His big PR bettered his state-qualifier by almost a tenth of a second. He doubled back in the next event, running another personal best in the 55m dash (7.28) to claim second, behind fellow senior and captain Peter Rivard (7.15). Wisnaskas would go on to the field to claim victory in the high jump, as well (5'-10"). Around the same time, Jameson Macnaught (34'-4") launched a huge personal best in the shot put to propel the Lancers with another three points in his second place finish. His throw carried the throws crew, with the top four guys comfortably clearing 30 feet for the second meet in a row.

On the oval, Sean Wynne (5:00.0) continued his early season success with a second place showing in the mile. Split between first and third, Wynne utilized his strength against solely the clock to put down a career best in the eight-lap race. Following him, in the "long 400m" alternative, senior captain DJ Nihill (1:32.8) came storming through the last 200m to confidently claim the W in the 600m race. Likewise, CJ Liebherr (39.35) kept the points rolling in a season's best performance in the 300m, bringing another three points home for the Lancers. In the final individual event of the day, senior captain Austin Carroll (2:42.9) escaped early challengers for a dominant solo effort in the 1,000m run. In doing so, Carroll's win was also under the state-qualifying standard, earning the Lancer's second automatic state-qualifier on the evening.

Wrapping up track action, conveniently with the meet tied at 40-all, brought the boys' 4x400m relay onto the track. The TVL-leading 4x400m squad, composed of scorers Rivard, Liebherr, Nihill and Wisnaskas, took to the track hoping to clinch the meet for NHS. They found themselves in early trouble following the first hand-off, behind both Medway and Hopkinton. Rivard kept the team in contention while Liebherr moved the group up to neck-and-neck with Medway; but it was Nihill who delivered a strong pass with roughly 80m to go, handing the stick to Wisnaskas only 10m off Hopkinton. Wisnaskas took off with determination and handled Hopkinton comfortably, shaving off nearly two seconds of their state-qualifier from the week prior, finishing with another TVL-leading time of 3:41.5. Not only beating Medway, but the top time in the meet, the Lancers rode the 4x400m relay into their first win of the year, 46-42.
