The Norton High School Indoor Track & Field team welcomed Dedham High School to Wheaton College to open up the indoor track season this past Thursday evening. Despite a late start, and an even later finish, the girls held their own and comfortably out-paced Dedham to a season-opening win, 49-37, while the boys ran out of steam by the end of the meet, falling to the Marauders 34-51.
Boys (0-1)
The meet opened with similarity to how last winter ended as junior Paul Wisnaskas (8.5) shook off some rust to grab a season-opening win in the 55m hurdles while teammate James Partridge (9.85) was not too far behind in grabbing a third place point in the event. With many sprinters gone to graduation, the reigns to the sprints core is up and open and freshman Jason Soares (7.29) appeared to grab hold as he split two Dedham runners to grab his first career varsity points in finishing second in the 55m dash.
Returning varsity distance runners Sean Wynne (5:02.3) and senior captain Ethan Tetrault (5:18.1) took grasp hold of the mile following a hard-fought cross country season in the fall. The pair sandwiched Dedham for another 1-3 finish to score nine points in the event. Tetrault (3:00.5) returned two events later to earn a W on his own in a strategical 1,000m race. But prior to, sophomores Charlie Mills (1:40.8) and Elliot Wilson (1:53.5) earned their first points of the season picking up the rear in the 600m to earn second and third, respectively.
Meanwhile in the shot, the Lancers used early throws to seize command only to have Dedham come flying back in the final round. When the dust settled, senior captain Jameson MacNaught (37'-10.5") still managed to split the Marauders in a runner-up finish. It was a similar scene in the high jump where Dedham newcomers found their groove quickly and out-leaped Wisnaskas (5'-8") who, just like MacNaught, salvaged a second place finish in the fields.
The last two scorers for the boys were rookies to the indoor ranks. In an uncharacteristically fast second half of the 300m, Danny Tran (42.15) managed to hold on to a third place finish. In the final individual event, freshman Aiden Masse (11:44.1) utilized flawless pacing along with teammate Isabella Pietraiewicz to secure a strong second place finish in the co-ed 2 Mile against Dedham.

Girls (1-0)
The girls team came off to a slow start at the beginning of the meet as they missed several key athletes to injury and the Winter Concert. Nevertheless, Heather Kurland (9.9) steered the ship straight in grabbing a third place finish in the 55m hurdles despite a shortened warm-up prior to the meet. Senior captain Eve Rodriguez (7.9) followed suit shortly afterwords in finding her way between two Dedham runners to grab a second place finish.
Points began piling in as the oval events continued. Senior captain Ashley Schepis (6:04) earned a personal best in the mile while keeping freshman Shea Podbelski (6:17.1) in tow in order to earn a 1-3 finish in the eight-lap event. The Lady Lancers further ran away from the competition as Megan Cross (1:50.8) and Kylie Dion (1:54.3) gapped the field early in the 600m to finish back-to-back. The mid-distance dominance continued in the 1,000m with Destiny McGrath (3:35.7) and freshman Brooke Dennett (3:50.5) earning their first varsity points on the season, with McGrath losing out on a lean after a furious comeback on the bell-lap. The 2-3 finish still netted the Lancers four points to keep the meet within reach.
In the high jump, Caitlin Whiteside (4'-2") bested Kurland on attempts in order to grab a third place point. Regardless, a near sweep of the 300m started to put the meet out of reach, as freshman Ali Murphy (44.40) paced Rodriguez (47) to a heat sweep of Dedham. However, Lindsey Bingel (50.18) was out-paced by a Dedham runner from another heat which displaced her from completing the Lancer sweep. Regardless, Michaela Whiteside (28'-2") teamed up with Erica Ransom (27'-11") to grab strong early season tosses in the shot put to escape Dedham with another eight points via their first and second place finishes.
Wrapping up the meet was Isabella Pietrasiewicz (12:20.2) who, despite running an additional lap, earned herself a win in the 2 Mile. This past Fall's Cross Country All-Stater earned an unofficial 11:44.1 through 16 laps where a miscount of laps by officials had her complete a 17th. She paved the way for the 4x400m relay team of Murphy, Bingel, Kurland and Dion to cruise to an outright win in 4:33, three seconds over second place Ashland.
