Wisnaskas, Kurland and Pietrasiewicz Shine at Speed Classic

Opting for a different invitational this year, Norton traveled to the first of their winter break meets, competing in the sprints/long jump-only Speed Classic. Distance runners raced down in the 600m and created a plethora of relays while state-qualifiers sharpened up and opened more options for the post-season.

Boys

No stranger to the top of the podium, the Lancer Top 10 on the day was directed by junior Paul Wisnaskas. Opening up in the long jump, he struggled to fall into a groove but still remained consistent in his outright performance. Despite his limited opportunities to practice/compete in the event, the school record holder still took the title jumping 20'-5". Likewise, on the first running event of the day, Wisnaskas (8.28) made up for early struggles in the first couple hurdles to grab a third place finish in the event.

Racing out of the fourth section, Sean Wynne (1:30.01) seized the heat from the gun and never looked back. Running with unrivaled focus, he narrowly missed breaking the illusive 1:30-barrier in the 600m, but still found himself with an impressive personal best and a ninth place finish.

Far from done, Wynne teamed up with fellow distance runners Derek Bamford, Ethan Tetrault and Charlie Mills in the 4x400m relay. The distance quartet made their case for the A team as they posted a season's best 3:55.77 at the end of the meet, winning the second section and finishing seventh overall.

Girls

Just as Wisnaskas got the boys rolling in the long jump and hurdles, classmate Heather Kurland followed his exact lead. A first jump fault had her recorrect her launch and found her improving her state-qualifier to 16'-6.5". Once again, the Lancer long jumpers continue to find success despite the lack of opportunities, with Kurland sealing a second place finish in the event. And to match Wisnaskas further, Kurland (9.45) improved her personal best in the hurdles to inch closer to the state-qualifying standard, grabbing eighth place in the event.

The lone other Top 10 finisher was a small, but expected, surprise. Junior Isabella Pietrasiewicz (1:42.12) made her season debut in the 600m run, grabbing a third state-qualifying time in doing so. Though competing out of the barrel in the third section, Pietrasiewicz seized command of the race by the end of the first lap, refusing to look back. Left to race the clock, she won her section by a staggering three seconds, placing second overall in the event. At the completion of the event, her time stood as the MA#7 time so far on the short season.

Still chasing the state standard, the 4x200m relay team of senior captain Eve Rodriguez, Lindsey Bingel, Ali Murphy, and Kurland (1:52.68) did improve on their season's best. Chasing Westborough in a quick second section, the Lady Lancers finished fourth on the day.
