PRs and Pietrasiewicz Sets Fall 2 Record as Lancers Sweep Norwood Mustangs

An unusually warm late-April afternoon provided the ideal backdrop for competition and the Lancers wasted no time heeding to it. Backed by double wins by senior captains Heather Kurland and Isabella Pietrasiewicz, the girls team improved to 2-0, beating Norwood 62-20. In similar fashion, three wins by fellow senior captain Paul Wisnaskas and two by Sean Wynne placed the Lancers in the win column as they managed the Mustangs, 51-35.

Girls (2-0)

Kurland (9.4h) opened up the day leading a clean sweep in the girls 55m hurdles, paving the way for Shaylee Owens (9.7) and senior Madeline Dolack (10.6) to take a quick 9-0 lead in the meet. Following them on the straightaway, Ali Murphy (7.5h) improved on last week's season opener as she managed to place second against the top TVL 55m sprinter.

Planning a Mile/2 Mile double, Pietrasiewicz (5:24.0h) comfortably took the premier four lap event over Norwood's Olivia Beaudet by nearly 20 seconds while sophomore Lauren LaFrancois (6:50.0h) posted a new personal best en-route to scoring a third place point for the Lady Lancers. Picking up the curve on the track, Carly Goodwin (1:55.1h) edged out teammate Kiera Dooley (1:55.6h) as the pair pushed each other to new lifetime bests in the event in spearheading a 1-2-3 finish for the Lancers, completed by classmate Ava Scagnoli (2:05.8h).

On the infield, Kurland (4'-6") rounded back into high jump form to take the event while track newcomer Brynn Leahy (4'-4") caught a groove and improved her best jump by four inches in just her second meet to claim runner-up honors. Meanwhile, the sophomore dominated 1,000m run created another sweep for the Lancers led by Shea Podbelski (3:20.0h). In another close finish, Brooke Dennett (3:30.0h) edged out teammate Sienna Pietrasiewicz (3:30.1h) for second place, while the pair both earned new PRs by nearly six seconds each respectively.

Murphy (43.5h) returned to the 300m but was kept at bay again by Norwood, but earning a new season's best along with a second place finish while Kurland (46.6h) broke through to finish third. While in the shot, senior captain Michaela Whiteside (28'-2") reached a season's best in earning a second place finish, guiding teammate Callie Dennett (22'-7") to a big personal best in her second meet throwing shot, earning her first varsity point.

In the girls 2 Mile, Pietrasiewicz (11:13.0h) lined up as the sole female in the co-ed field. Helped on pace by teammate and boys 2 Mile winner Aiden Masse (11:10.0h), she cruised to a time that bested her own indoor track team record, set her freshman year ('17-'18; 11:37.05), by nearly 24 seconds. Her mark, formally recognized as the Fall 2 team record, presently sits her at US#1 for the 2 Mile (per MileSplit.com).

With the meet W in hand, the Lady Lancers wrapped up the day putting together the TVL #1 4x400m relay time with a team comprised solely of underclassmen. Podbelski, Sienna Pietrasiewicz, Pheobe Gesner, and Brooke Dennett came together to take the lead by 150m and never look back as they crossed the line at 4:38.2h.

Boys (1-1)

Just like the girls, the boys took off at the first gun of the meet with Wisnaskas (7.8h) earning a TVL#1 and season's best in the 55m hurdles while, in a tie for second in his first hurdles race, Julian Melendez (10.0h) earned his first Lancer varsity points while splitting with Norwood. Unfortunately in similar faction, the Men of Norton struggled in the sprints managing only a third place finish by Danny Tran (7.2h) in a hotly-contested finish that required extra analysis by officials following the race.

Holding off till the bell lap, Wynne (4:57h) seized the lead in the boys Mile and did not relinquish it in crossing the line in a TVL#1 mark. Inspired by his kick, senior classmates Derek Bamford (5:02.0h) and Gabe Dennett (5:05.0h) did one better in coming back from roughly 80m out to catch the fading Norwood runner and outkick him to a Lancer sweep of the Mile. Both Bamford and Dennett notched personal bests for their efforts.

Again, following the mood of the day, Charlie Mills (1:31.5h) picked off a Norwood runner with 150m left in the 600m to finish second behind Wisnaskas (1:28.1h) in another personal best effort, this time by nearly two seconds in the short, lap and a half race. With only the 600m in between his double, Wynne (2:53.5) saved his last heroics of the day until the remaining 50m in the 1,000m run to take over and grab his second W of the day by just under two seconds.

In the field, senior captain Ryan Carroll (38'-10.75") continued his dominance in cementing his second dual meet win in as many meets. The TVL#1 thrower only needed to crack 30 ft to get it done while Dennett (30'-6.25") added three feet on to his previous best from last week to earn his first varsity throws points in placing second to Carroll. On the infield, Wisnaskas (5'-4") quickly wrapped up his day with only one jump following the 600m. Opening up at 5'-4", he comfortably gained clearance before shutting it down for his second three-win meet of the season. But right behind him, in another personal best result, was senior Duncan Owens (5'-2") adding two inches to his best to claim second place points for the field squad.

While Norton was swept in the 300m, Masse (11:10.0h) returned from early-season injury with a valiant punch. Coming through the first mile in roughly 5:37 with Pietrasiewicz, the pair kept the pressure on and drilled through the final 800m. Masse ended up winning the boys 2 Mile by a minute, shattering his previous PR.

Though the squad of Mills, Bamford, Dennett and Jason Soares (3:49.0h) just missed taking the 4x400m by just a couple seconds, their performance was worthy of a TVL#2 mark amongst Fall 2 competing teams.
