Indoor Track is Back! Girls Win and Boys Lose Nailbiter in Reggie TVL Debut against Dover-Sherborn

Action on the indoor track returned yesterday as the Lancers made the early morning trip up to Reggie Lewis to open Tri-Valley League action. With the entire league competing, it was a hectic and frustrating environment for the three-hour window, but the Lancers proved themselves quick learners and adjusted to procedures to put together a wildly successful day, just a tad before noon. The girls, led by senior captain Julia Newell, blew away D-S, 67-19. On the heels of an exciting high jump that was cut short by time constraints, the boys fell just short of completing the clean sweep of Dover-Sherborn, 42-44.

Girls (1-0)

A well-balanced display helped the Lady Lancers seize control of the meet right from the start. A clean sweep of the 55m hurdles by Newell, senior captain Lilly Holloway (10.16), and Madeline Dolack (11.10) put Norton out front by nine points. Holloway also earned a point from the high jump (4'-2") while freshman Casey Ball (4'-2") managed to grab second place, besting her teammate on attempts. Quickly transitioning to the 55m dash, Newell also continued her quick start grabbing the runner-up spot (7.92) with junior Eve Rodriguez (8.19) right behind her to build onto the Lancer lead. The dominance continued into the distance-oriented events with back-to-back sweeps of the mile and 600m. Senior captain Hannah Delea (6:21.8) led the distance pack as young depth showed their potential to the league with freshman Lauren Anderson (6:35.38) and sophomore Hope LeClaire (6:56.26) grabbing their first varsity points of the season. It was quickly followed up with junior Kylie Dion's (1:50.97) debut win in the 600m, as she paced the way for third place's Ashley Schepis (1:54.97) and senior Hannah Kubinski's (1:51.06) surprise last 200m kick for second. Dion's first run at the 600m was the second fastest on the day in TVL action.

Not to be outdone by Newell, Rodriguez doubled back in the 300m, this time grabbing a second place finish (47.37) as freshman Heather Kurland (47.40) earned her first varsity points in her first indoor track meet. Meanwhile, at the shot put, sophomore Michaela Whiteside (29'-10.25") opened up her season with a strong win against Dover-Sherborn, only six and three-fourths inches farther than transfer senior Amanda Hamer-Moreno (29'-5"). Whiteside's throw was the second farthest throw in the entire meet, which also qualified her for the Freshman-Sophomore Invitational. Back on the oval, the 1,000m girls swept D-S with freshman Megan Cross (3:24.59) leading the pack. Destiny McGrath (3:40.25) and Sarah Kubinski (3:54.82) followed suit placing fifth and sixth in their heat respectively, while earning second and third place points against D-S.

In another Freshman-Sophomore qualifier, and Division 4 State Qualifying time, sophomore Isabella Pietrasiewicz (11:49.89) made her return from the extended cross country in dominant fashion in the two-mile. Though the field strung out early, she was only fifteen seconds behind Hopkinton's Schuyler Gooley. Her cross country teammate, Skye Goba, also earned a varsity point in the two-mile (13:32.02).  Finishing up the track action, the girls 4x400m relay of Kurland, senior captain Kirsten Loring, Ball, and Dion handled baton easily around the track (4:31.82) for a fifth place overall finish and win over D-S.

Boys (0-1)

The hurdle duo of Division 3 champion Paul Wisnaskas and senior captain Corey Stalters wasted no time towards getting back to their outdoor track successes on the indoor infield. The former ran away from the field in a TVL Best 8.17 while the later settled for the third best time in the TVL (8.26) while earning a second best finish against Dover-Sherborn. The pair both earned Division 4 State Qualifying times with their finishes out of the first heat of the day. Stalters followed that up with a 7.30 in the 55m dash, following classmate and captain Peter Rivard (7.26) in a 1-2 finish against D-S. The points continued to score as the oval brought about a third place finish from Ethan Tetrault (5:09.43) in the mile run. Meanwhile, in the shot put cage, the throws squad put together one of their best performances in the past two years. With four boys throwing 30 feet, Jameson Macnaught (32'-6.5") and senior Jackson Weaver (30'-10.5") led the charge with a 2-3 placement. In his first meet, freshman Ben Litchfield (30'-0") also posted a big throw that qualified him for next month's Freshman-Sophomore Invitational.

Excitement continued on the track in the 600 meter run. Sophomore Sean Wynne (1:35.92) employed a strong race and utilized a ferocious kick in the final 150 meters to claim a dominant win, posting the second fastest TVL time of the day. Freshman Charlie Mills joined Wynne with his first varsity points, claiming a third place finish (1:43.50). In the long sprints, sophomore CJ Liebherr (40.26) ran a hard dash to claim third in the 300m while thrower-runner Nick Denham (3:09.75) ran a significant personal best to claim a varsity point in the 1,000m run.

The two mile brought the boys' third Division 4 State Auto-Qualifier. Senior captain Austin Carroll, fresh off his medalist honors from the Division 2 All-State Cross Country Meet, used his base strength to his advantage by clicking off consistent splits halfway through his the 16-lapper. A massive negative split and a hard surging final 300 charged him to a massive personal best, and a TVL second-best time of 10:22.12, just squeaking underneath the auto-qualifier.

Wrapping up the track events, the boys 4x400m relay team of Rivard, Liebherr, Wynne and Wisnaskas took the lead from the gun and never looked back. With unofficial splits of 55.2, 56.3, 56.8, and 53.8, the boys ran a TVL-best 3:43.45, scoring a Division 4 State Qualifier in the process. But of course, with several jumps still to complete, Wisnaskas headed back into the infield to pull off a shocking two inch personal best to go jump-for-jump with Medfield's John McNeil. Unfortunately, the only thing stopping Wisnaskas was time itself, as the meet time window ran out with the two attempting to jump 6'-2". Nevertheless, Wisnaskas secured a win against Dover-Sherborn, shares a tie with McNeil atop the TVL rankings, and solidified a ticket (his third on the day!) to the Division 4 State Championships.
